As more and more people become aware of the power of the Internet as a shopping tool, we are seeing an increase in the number of people turning to the Internet when in need of various clothing items. This they do aware of the fact that the Internet is the world’s greatest free market, where they are likely to find the very best deals in terms of clothing , if they look hard enough. This they also do out of an aware of the fact that it is only through the Internet that they can find the greatest variety in terms of the clothing items they happen to be looking for.

One of the best places to go shopping for clothing online is at the various auction sites, an example of which is EBay. And no, these online auction sites are not only about shopping for second hand clothing being sold on account of the owners have defaulted on one or another debt, but rather places where you can find new fantastic clothing items – straight from the makers – being sold at great prices, but on an auction basis, that is, where the highest bidder goes with the item.

Another good place to shopping for clothing online is at the various online catalog stores. Before the advent of the Internet, the people using this business model used to send beautiful catalogs of their products to various people, often randomly, so that any person who saw the catalog and liked the items they thus saw could call the vendors and buy the item in question. The strategy worked out perfect when it was tried on the Internet, but online, it was usually the buyers going to the vendors’ online catalogs (through the online searches) rather than the vendors trying to push the catalogs to the buyers. The deal in most of these online stores is that you identify a clothing item you like, put it in a online ‘shopping cart’ and pay for it through online channels like credit card or PayPal, and wait for the clothing item to be delivered to you (sometimes right up to your doorstep) through mechanisms like ordinary post (in countries with reliable postal systems) or special parcel delivery methods, like the FedEx system.

Most clothing manufacturers have established websites with E-commerce capabilities, and these make yet another excellent place to go shopping for clothing online. While the manufactures of the clothing items might not want to undercut their distribution channels significantly, they still do tend to sell the items that they post on their websites at significantly better prices than what you could get elsewhere.

The idea of ‘shopping for clothes you will love’ might at first appear odd. After all, don’t we always shop for the clothing items we love and fancy? And who, in their right mind, could spend their hard-earned cash on clothing items they didn’t love?

But as it turns, buying clothing items we don’t love turns out to be something we regularly do. You know that you have bought a clothing item you don’t love when you find yourself feeling unwilling – for some unnamed reason – to wear it again after having worn it the first time. Granted, you may somehow force yourself to keep on wearing the clothing item – probably after thinking of the money you spend on it – but if you are finding yourself having to force yourself to wear a clothing item, then clearly that is a clothing item that you don’t love.

One of the reasons we end up buying clothing items we don’t love is going shopping for clothing in too much of a hurry. Due to this, we end up picking up clothing items that are either oversized (and therefore ungainly and unattractive) or undersized (and therefore uncomfortable to wear), or simply picking up clothing items of the wrong makes and colors. It is therefore essential to make adequate time when shopping for clothes, and ensure that the items we finally opt for are just the right size, make and color. Making time to go shopping for clothes might be a motivational matter, and the joy (as well as self confidence) that could come out of our wearing clothes that suit us well should surely be enough motivation for us to set aside adequate time when going shopping for clothes.

Shopping for clothes impulsively is another reason we end up buying clothes that we don’t love. And the way to overcome this by first making up our minds on exactly what we want before going out to shop for the clothes. Remember, if you know what you want, then you are more likely to get it. This adage applies equally to the big goals in life – as well as to ‘smaller things’ like shopping for clothes.

Pressure from salesmen is another thing that can lead us to buying clothes we won’t love. And the way to overcome this is by first making up our minds on what we really want as we go out shopping for clothes – including the finer details like sizes, colors and makes – and then ensuring that no one distracts us from the same, however persuasive they happen to be.

Going shopping for clothes can be a big hassle for some of us. There are those whose objection to clothing-shopping arises out of the fact that shopping for clothes calls for a lot of care – with regard to what feel like mundane things like sizes and colors – if you are to ensure that you get clothes that convey the right messages about you. There are also those whose hatred for the process of shopping for clothes arises out of a subconscious aversion to the often domineering clothing salespeople who are to be found in most clothing stores. Then there are those of us who simply hate going shopping for clothing because of a subconscious feeling that shopping for clothes is financially wasteful – and in this group are those of us who will only go shopping for clothing when it becomes clear to us that we are absolutely running out of usable clothing items. For all these groups of people going shopping for clothes feels like a hassle that we would rather do as fast as possible, and get done with it.

Yet there is a strong case for setting aside adequate time to go shopping for clothing, and against shopping for clothes in a hurry. Unless you can set aside adequate time to go shopping for clothing, you are likely to end up in a situation where you will perpetually be wearing either oversized, undersized or mismatched clothing items, making you look rather awkward. And if you go on wearing these kinds of clothing for long enough, you could end up in a situation where that kind of dressing becomes a part of your identity to others, that is, the way other people identify you – namely, as a person who is not image conscious. Such identification can, by the way, be injurious to both your social and professional lives.

Most of the psychological barriers that make it difficult for us to make time to go shopping for clothing take the form of procrastination. And the way to beat it is by finding ways of making the shopping trips fun even when we feel subconsciously inclined to hate the task. Motivation tricks we can use to this end include things like changing your ‘pep talk’ (so that you don’t feel irritated by the clothes salespeople) and rewarding yourself for every cloth-shopping trip you make successfully, with the success here being judged by things like the quality of items you manage to come out with, the deals you manage to hammer out and so on. And properly employed, these motivation tricks can turn a person who was apathetic to the task of shopping for clothes into a real ‘shopaholic,’ at least as far as shopping for clothes goes.

Believe it or not, you can make a viable career out of shopping for clothes.

This stems from the fact that many people are either too lazy, or simply averse – for one good reason or another – to the task of shopping for clothes. Now the task of shopping for clothes can seem to be a very easy one (and it is indeed a hobby for some people), but it can also be very demanding to some of us, as it calls for attention to details like color schemes, precise sizes and ‘makes’ (stitches and all that) – and attention, particularly this level, is something that many of us sorely lack. But even for those of us to whom shopping for clothes is a pleasurable undertaking, there is still a need for someone to go shopping for the clothes on a wholesale level, and it is here that the opportunity to make a career shopping for clothes arises: in going shopping for clothes on behalf of others. If you really enjoy shopping for clothes, you can, for instance, go shopping for clothes at a wholesale scale, the un-bundle them and start selling them on retail basis to other people at a great profit.

But the endeavor is not as easy as it sounds.

To make a career shopping for clothes, you will have to be very perceptive to people’s needs, and to the subtle trends emerging in the fashion scene. The way to make a killing out these trends is to catch one when it is right in the bud, find a way of feeding it (the trend) and make yourself some neat money out of it before the market gets flooded.

You will naturally need to have a sense of fashion to make a career shopping for clothes. You should be able – at the very least – to understand what shoe color goes with what skirt color, otherwise you risk traveling far and wide and coming back with items that are so mismatched that nobody buys them.

Good marketing skills too will be absolutely essential if you are to make a successful career shopping for clothes. Remember, this is not just about shopping for the clothes, but also finding a retail market for them once you have bought them. Generally the best way to market your clothes offline is through networking, though having a front-street store would help greatly, if you can marshal the resources required for it. Starting to sell the clothes online is of course another avenue you can explore – and indeed you can marshal the power of the Internet such that you can be shopping for the clothes online on one website (say a manufacturers website) and selling them on another website (say your own catalog website or through an auction website like EBay) and thereby making yourself money shopping for clothes and reselling them, without ever touching the (physical) clothing items!

Shopping for clothes feels like too much of a hassle for many of us. Of course, there are the diehard ‘shopaholics’ who would fall sick if they didn’t go shopping for clothes at least once a month, but for most people, and especially men (the traditional macho type), shopping for clothes is a hassle that we only commit ourselves to do because it is something we have to do anyway, if we are to continue looking decent.

This aversion to shopping for clothes is typically not even consciously known to those of us who have it. It tends to manifest in subtle ways, through things like procrastination, where we keep putting off the task of going shopping for clothes endlessly, till we are left with no alternative but to get down to it. And even when we get to shopping for clothing – after having procrastinated the task endlessly – we are still eager to do it quickly, and get done with it.

Yet shopping for clothes need not be an unpleasant task, and it is in fact something you can get to enjoy.

The first step towards enjoying shopping for clothes is identifying the subconscious causes for the aversion to the task. Could it be the clothes salesmen (whom some of us consider a bit domineering) whom you don’t want to interact with? Could it be that you have been unconsciously conditioned to view shopping for clothes as being wasteful? Or could it be just a plain case of lack of motivation that you can’t really pin down to a particular cause? Identify clearly the subconscious cause to your aversion to the task of shopping for clothes.

Having identified the subconscious causes for your aversion to the task of shopping for clothes, the next step would be to take steps to counter those causes. Shopping for clothes is something you have to do, anyway, so you better find ways of enjoying it. If it is the ‘domineering’ clothes salespeople you don’t like, then you can consider opting to go shopping for clothes online, where you won’t have to interact with them. If on the other hand your aversion to the task of shopping for clothes is due to a subconscious feeling that shopping for clothes is wasteful, then you might consider working towards overcoming your guilt at spending, keeping in mind that clothing is a basic human need and money spend in meeting it is money really well spend. And if it is a simple lack of motivation behind your aversion to the task of shopping for clothes, you can address it through strategies like changing your pep talk or rewarding yourself for every cloth-shopping trip you carry out well, so that your mind is (in the future) subconsciously attracted to the task, in search of the ‘reward’ it got the ‘last time’ you went on the task.
