Going Beyond Age When Shopping for Clothes for Kids

Shopping for clothes for kids is one of the tasks every parent with young children is bound to find herself or himself undertaking every once in a while. And it is not always an easy task.

There a number of factors that making shopping for clothes for the kids a bit more difficult than shopping for clothes for adults. And one of the factors that make shopping for clothes for kids a bit difficult is the fact that kids tend to grow in sudden bursts, rather than gradually, making it hard to tell what clothe-sizes to buy for them. A child who was wearing a given cloth-size this month could find himself having grown two or three sizes bigger in a time span of six months. And we are not talking of the kid having gained weight, but rather having grown naturally in both height and weight. Adult cloth sizes also do change, but the change tends to be rather progressive, such that you can see yourself moving from a size 8 to size 9 and then to size 10 gradually as you, for instance, gain weight for whatever reasons.

Now the way things normally work is such that kids are not always present with their parents when the parents go shopping for their (children’s) clothes. Sometimes this is due to unavoidable circumstances like where the parent decides, out of impulse, to purchase such and such a clothing item for the young one, while the young one is not with them. Then there are those cases where the parent deliberately decides to leave the young one behind at home when going shopping for the kid’s clothing, maybe to avoid the embarrassing shopping tantrums that tend to take place when parents go shopping while accompanied by the kids.

Aware of the fact that kids are not always present when clothes are being purchased for them, manufacturers of clothing have over time worked out age-size conventions, such that a given clothing item is labeled as being for 5 year olds, with another being labeled as being for 7 year olds. Yet there is need to sometimes go beyond these age-size conventions when shopping for clothes for children, as the clothes bought in this method can be rather disappointing when they turn out to be either too large (and hence unsightly) or too small (and hence uncomfortable for the kid). It is important to remember that the makers of children’s clothing have no magical way of knowing your kid’s age, and the size they are bound to sell you on account of your kid’s age is calculated on the basis of the assumed average size of a child of that age, which often turns out to be rather too large or too small for the individual kids of that age. It is therefore essential to make a point of knowing your child’s approximate waist, height and neck size, and make use these, as they make better metrics when shopping for clothes for kids than the manufacturer’s age-size conventions, which are really just averages.

Clothes are making strong inroads into the online auction sites like EBay – and buyers are grabbing them fast. As it turns out, shopping for clothes on these online auction sites offers a number of benefits. The greatest of these is of course the cost saving. The people who sell their wares on these online auction sites are, after all, able to save on a number of costs that their counterparts selling clothing items in brick and mortar stores or even those selling on online stores have to incur. Moreover, the online auction stores have mechanisms for protecting the interests of all the parties involved in the transactions, a good instance of which are the escrow arrangements, where the vendor won’t dispatch the items you want before you fund the escrow, and where you don’t release the money in the escrow to the vendor before the items you purchased are delivered to you. Add to this the fact that most of these online auction sites don’t require for you to reveal your bank account details as they accept payments through third party channels like PayPal, and you seen why so many people are opting to go shopping for clothes on such sites.

Among the things you should pay particular attention to as you go shopping for clothes on these online auctions are things like the reputation of the auction site you are considering buying from (not all are so great); as well as the transaction costs for doing business on the site, as these have been known to make the overall costs of the clothing items bought from the sites significantly more expensive, in spite of the lower prices quoted on the prices. How shipping is to be handled is yet another factor to consider when shopping for clothes from the online auction sites, as the shipping element can add significantly to the overall prices you ultimately pay for the item of clothing, in spite of the lower prices that may be quoted on the website, but which are likely to be exclusive of such shipping costs. The reputation of the vendor you are considering purchasing the clothing item from is something you might want to check out too, and this is something you can establish from the vendor’s reviews feature in most of the online auction sites.

All in all, shopping for clothes on the online auctions can be a smart move, especially when done right.
